Selective breeding has offered advantages such as greater milk yield per cow or pigs producing leaner meat, and we know it has been used for thousands of years because ancient Egyptian illustrations show domestic cats that must have been produced by selective breeding. One problem with any kind of selection, however, is that it inevitably reduces the amount of genetic variation in a population, making it more and more difficult to make further gains in the breed.
